Steel Commuter and Gravel Bike
Preamble is a hard-boiled steel commuter built for comfort, durability, and buffoonery on pavement and gravel.
Nothing More is Needed. Nothing Less Will Do.
The challenge was thus: Build a serious steel bike and give it only the attributes that matter most. Make it quick and comfortable on pavement, as well as confident and compliant on degraded surfaces. What the Enginerds put forth is Preamble, a pavement and gravel utility worker that proves you don't need to cut corners or clip coupons to make a more affordable steel bike. You just need to keep it simple.
Preamble can run racks and fenders and carry a couple water bottles. Surly was raised on stealing basic cable, after all. Smooth and efficient on asphalt, Preamble's double-butted main triangle provides a resplendent ride feel and withstands abuse from life's inevitable potholes. Make it your own with flat bars, drop bars, a basket, or bags. On the road to steel euphoria, Preamble is the gateway drug.
Let facts be submitted to a candid world:
- Offered in flat-bar and drop-bar configurations

To brake or to disc brake? The debate isn't getting any colder and Surly decided it's best to let you choose. Straggler is bred from Surly's revered rim-brake Cross-Check and comes out a lot the same, but also a little different. Frame geometry is pretty close, and you get all the attachment provisions for racks, fenders, and bottle cages that make these bikes something more utilitarian than a standard 'cross racer. Disc brakes are the obvious change though, and the Straggler sports Hayes CX Experts with 160mm rotors front and rear. The athletic character continues with a SRAM Apex 2x10 drivetrain, giving you a useful gear range for any type of riding you can dream up, and continues with 32-hole alloy Alex XD-E Lite rims wrapped in Surly's own super-versatile 700c x 41 Knard rubber. A Salsa Cowbell handlebar is great for riding on mixed terrain, too, giving you a bit more control when it's loose while retaining comfortable positioning for cranking into the wind. Make it your gravel explorer on weekends, your trusty commuter during the week, and go collect all the hand-ups when cyclocross season rolls around. This Straggler's lookin' for a good time and you seem like the type to oblige.

650b what? In the old days when randonneuring bikes ruled on long rides over mixed surfaces, the 650b tire size was perfectly suited for moving fast under control. Surly took this concept and applied it to the Straggler, a disc brake-equipped any-road type of bike bred from their revered Cross Check. The slightly smaller wheels accommodate smaller frame sizes and plump tire widths, creating options where few exist in this realm of bike riding. Disc brakes highlight the Straggler 650b story, sporting Hayes CX Experts with 160mm rotors front and rear. The athletic character continues with a SRAM Apex 2x10 drivetrain, giving you a useful gear range for any type of riding you can dream up, and continues with 32-hole alloy Alex Adventurer 2 rims wrapped in Surly's own super-versatile 650b x 41 Knard rubber.
